He’s said it before and he’ll say it again: Zayn Malik is NOT on board with One Direction’s music. The singer is branching out on his own, and took another opportunity to slam his former bandmates in a brand new interview. Sigh. see more.......
Zayn Malik, 22, doesn’t exactly look back on his time in One Direction completely fondly. It seems he’s taken every chance he can get to say something about his former band’s tunes, and he dissed them once again in an interview released Jan. 7, reiterating that he’s just not about the music the group makes.“I genuinely enjoyed [the band] and did whatever I could to be myself within that, but it’s just not where I sit as a musician,” he told Billboard. “The other boys’ taste was generally indie rock. It’s good music, but I don’t f— with it. That was never cool where I was from.” Whoa, okay, don’t hold back or anything, Zayn!
Of course, these sentiments are nothing new. The 22-year-old left 1D to be a “normal” guy, but just a few months later, he’d signed a solo record deal with RCA, and has been working on his own music ever since. “There was never any room for me to experiment creatively within the band,” he admitted to Entertainment Weekly in November. “If I would sing a hook or verse slightly R&B, it would always be recorded 50 times until there was a straight version that was pop, general as f**, so they could use that version. Whenever I would suggest something, it was like it didn’t fit us. There was just a general conception that the management already had of what they want for the band, and I just wasn’t convinced with what we were selling. I wasn’t 100 percent behind the music. In that interview, he added that the boy band’s music is not what he “would listen to,” and that he wants to make music that he thinks is “cool s—.” Well, now he has his opportunity. He teased his first solo single “BeFour” on Nov. 17, and revealed to Billboard that his album will be out sometime early this spring, a full year (or more) after he left 1D.
